There are many challenges growing up in a developing nation. When you are deaf, those struggles are magnified. A typical deaf child in Mexico does not have access to language or education. Deaf children are passed through school for the sake of formality, but the majority never learns how to read or communicate. This translates into a life of total dependence and great loneliness, being trapped without any means to express themselves or understand the world around them. This also signifies a group of people largely unreached by the Gospel. Society doesn’t hold much hope or expectation for these kids. The God who created them, however, is painting them a much more beautiful picture for their future.
We want the message of reconciliation to God to reach the students’ families as well. Weekly the school provides sign language classes to parents and siblings. These classes have paved the way for weekly Bible studies and family counseling with the parents as well. We have seen a peace come into many homes as the deaf students are now much better equipped to communicate to their family. We are confident that Christ is using these students to draw entire families to Him.
Volunteer work teams have made the construction of a school facility for the Deaf a reality. When we are not working on the school, teams have opportunity to support the community through other projects including the construction of shelters, dining halls, ministry spaces, and community centers which are used to build community and support other ministries.
GOSPEL OUTREACH
For those who feel like they will do more damage than good with a hammer in their hand, consider joining us in a Gospel outreach project. We organize VBS, sports camps, and ESL with non-churched youth.
MEDICAL
Another way teams are serving the community is through medical projects. Whether it be inner city or rural areas there are many physical needs in Mexico. Medical projects afford us a great opportunity to interact with the Mexican people and remind them in a small way that God has not forgotten about them.
